How to Keep Your Spine Young

Age gets blamed for a lot of things it's not actually responsible for.
The condition of your spine is one of them.
It's about mileage — usually the accumulation of microtraumas, poor posture, long hours at a desk, and especially abnormal biomechanical stress from the way you move (or don't move) every day. Think of it like this: a 50-year-old car that's been well maintained can outperform a brand-new one that's been driven hard and never serviced. Your spine is no different.
What matters isn't how long you've had it, it's how it's been treated.
Two X-Rays, One Big Lesson
I like to show patients two X-rays side by side. One is a healthy, well-preserved spine. The other shows arthritis and degenerative breakdown.
Here's the plot twist: the healthy spine belongs to the older patient.

Your Discs Are Alive — And They're Thirsty
Here's something everyone should know: your discs are living tissue.
Each disc has a gel-like center wrapped in tough outer fibers. But here's the catch — discs have no direct blood supply (that’s why they’re white!). They stay hydrated and nourished almost entirely through movement. Researchers have literally mapped this out at the cellular level, showing that oxygen, glucose, and other nutrients reach disc cells mostly through a slow diffusion process across the vertebral endplate (science here🔬) — which is exactly why a stiff, immobile spine is a hungry, dehydrated spine.
So what happens when biomechanics break down — bad posture, repetitive stress, a sedentary lifestyle? Within days to weeks, the disc can begin to dehydrate. It gets stiffer. Small cracks form. Over time, that loss of hydration causes the disc to thin, which increases load on the joints and can affect nearby nerves. Continue down that road long enough, and the disc can lose enough integrity to herniate.
So... Is Degeneration Permanent?
This is the part I want to be brutally honest about, because empowerment requires honesty.
Structural degeneration — thinning discs, bone spurs, arthritic changes — is permanent. A disc that has thinned will never rehydrate back to its full original thickness.
But here's the key message: the degeneration may be permanent, but your pain, your numbness, your tingling, your dysfunction is not — and your ability to heal isn't destroyed either.
This actually lines up with something interesting in the research: large studies of spinal imaging show degenerative changes appear in a huge percentage of people who have zero symptoms — nearly 90% of pain-free people over 60 have measurable disc degeneration on imaging. In other words, what shows up on a scan and what you actually feel day to day are two very different conversations. That's why restoring proper mobility to a stiff region matters so much — it helps preserve every millimeter of disc height you currently have, stimulates the nerve pathways running through that area, and supports the body's natural capacity to adapt.
So, How Do You Actually Keep Your Spine Young?
If mileage and maintenance are what matter, then you have a lot more control over your spine than you've been led to believe.
Move more than you think you need to. Discs get their nutrition from motion, not rest. Stand up, walk around, move.
Change positions often. There's no single "correct" posture to hold all day. The goal is to never stay in one position too long. Sitting is fine. Sitting for six hours straight isn't.
Take trauma seriously, even the small stuff. Old injuries that "healed fine" can leave behind restricted movement patterns that compound over years. The sooner it's addressed, the less damage is done.
Build in real recovery. Sleep, hydration, and basic strength work all support the tissue around your spine, which supports the spine itself.
Get regular chiropractic care. Adjustments restore full range of motion to individual spinal segments, which is what actually protects the joint and disc over time.
Don't wait for pain to be your signal. By the time you feel something, mileage has usually been accumulating quietly for years. Remember that study we mentioned earlier?
None of this requires perfection. It requires consistency — the same way a car doesn't need a flawless driver, just regular attention.
Degeneration is a Signal, Not a Sentence
