YOUR BACK MAY BE KILLING YOU – LITERALLY
A person may sometimes say, “Oh, I have a lot of things wrong with me but my back is fine.” The fact that you have health issues should tell you that you shouldn’t overlook your spine.
It is much more than just a structural support for the body; it is a critical conduit through which the brain – the bodies control center – transmits information via nerves to every part of the body. In turn, every part of the body, down to the tissues and individual cells, transmits information back to the brain. In this way the brain constantly monitors all parts of the body and sends messages to correct imbalances or problems – that is unless blockages along critical nerve pathways keep this from happening.
If the breakers (or in this case, vertebrae) are in correct position, all is well.
But if vertebrae get out of place or misaligned (postural problems, for example) it will cause the loss of mobility, the formation of scar tissue, and eventually bone spurs and arthritis. This is known as spinal degeneration. As the scar tissue develops nerve pathways become blocked. Because the 57 major nerves leading out from the spine carry information that controls everything in your body, illness will eventually result when nerve function is impaired. Chiropractic adjustments are used to restore proper structure and function to the spine, nervous system, and brain so that your body can function at 100% efficiency and potential.
MORE THAN JUST BACK PAIN
There is a misconception that chiropractic is meant to treat only neck pain, low back pain, and headaches. This couldn’t be farther from the truth. It was developed to correct other health issues by using spinal adjustments to correct misalignments in people’s spines (aka subluxations). This is why a recently publicized University of Chicago Medical Center study of hypertension (high blood pressure) showed that chiropractic realignment of just one vertebrae in the cervical spine brought a 17-point drop in blood pressure, and was more effective than two different medications used in combination.
A Philadelphia medical doctor, Henry Windsor, was fascinated by patients who reported improvement in their health using chiropractic. At the university of Pennsylvania, he dissected 75 human and 22 cat cadavers. Finding 221 diseased organs in the cadavers, he then looked for possible associated spinal problems. He found that 212 diseased organs – that were known to be the cause of death – corresponded with segments in the spine where vertebrae were misaligned and resulted in nerve damage. For example, all 20 cases of heart conditions showed misalignments in the upper five thoracic vertebrae – exactly the part of the spine where nerves controlling the heart emerge – while 26 cases of spinal misalignments in the upper thoracic spine had lung disease, again the part of the spine with nerves controlling the respiratory system.
WHAT DOES YOUR SPINE LOOK LIKE?
Unless there is pain – which often occurs after a spinal injury – most people have no idea about the condition of their spines. This is why a check-up at Ability Chiropractic is so important. We perform a thorough exam, including x-rays. This will show you the status of your spine and give you the insight and explanations as to why might by experiencing the health issues you do. Better health doesn’t come from a bottle or pill. It comes from your body being able to function at 100% so it can maintain it’s ability to operate, regulate, and repair itself.
